Dr. Laura Ballard

Dr. Laura Ballard (Ph.D. Second Language Studies, MA Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, BA Spanish and International Studies) is a project manager at the Center for Applied Linguistics.  Dr. Ballard has served as a project manager for the development of tests of English language learners, including tests to meet accountability reporting requirements for K-12 learners in Latin America as well as adult learners in the United States. Dr. Ballard also serves as the project manager for the CAL STARTALK Performance Assessment Training Program, a hybrid professional development program that CAL has offered since 2008 to instructors of less commonly taught languages. Prior to coming to the Center for Applied Linguistics, Dr. Ballard taught ESL/EFL in China, Niger, and the United States. 

Jorge Rivera

Jorge Riveraholds a B.A. in Modern Languages and Linguistics from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) and is currently finishing a M.A. in TESOL from American University (AU). He has over 12 years of language teaching in the United States and Japan.  In Japan, he taught in the private sector and at all public school levels from Pre-K, kindergarten, elementary school, middle school, high School, community colleges and companies. In the United States, he completed an AmeriCorps year teaching ELLs at the 40-year-old Arlington Education and Employment Program (REEP), an Intensive English Program, that serves underrepresented immigrants. Currently at CAL, Jorge works with domestic and international educational programs to meet their language education needs whether through Online-Education Professional Development, Technical Assistance with educational materials, training other teachers and English Proficiency testing instruments.
