The purpose of this CALL-IS Academic Session is to share blended learning components the panelists feel may create or promote effective tech-supported teaching/learning spaces.  The panelists showcase suggestions related to blended or hybrid lesson planning, methodologies, strategies, and activities, online content material, including open education resources (OER), tools and resources, and assessment.(50)

 

Description of session:

 

Blended learning and teaching spaces are designed from constructivism and studies report that such spaces may encourage individual or group language learning opportunities, flexible yet responsible education, tech-supported or tech-based learning support.  The CALL-IS Academic Session provides educators with a theoretical-practical perspective on current technology partnered education.  Whether the panelists address blended learning as a ‘theory’ of connectivity or as a space for models and strategies to be implemented, the purpose is to share components the panelists feel may create or promote effective tech-supported teaching/learning spaces.  The panelists showcase suggestions related to blended or hybrid lesson planning, methodologies, strategies, and activities, online content material, including open education resources (OER), tools and resources, and assessment. Specifically, after providing definitions of blended or hybrid learning, lesson plans to make learning spaces active are discussed to share content possibilities; to show methodologies and activities that work, and to exemplify tools that create content or learning spaces that engage the students in the process. Possibilities for online or face-to-face assessments are demonstrated to evaluate language ability and content mastery. Implications and recommendations are made in group discussion format with the audience.

This part of the presentation will discuss demonstrate the methodology and instructional design of a grammar activity that uses the Web-based service, TodaysMeet.com, in the blended classroom to teach, reinforce, and assess grammar skills. This segment will also weave in points on how traditional teaching and this online tool can enhance and extend face-to-face learning and provide meaningful assessment feedback outside of class

Presenter Bios:

Christine Sabieh

Dr. Christine SabiehProfessor at Notre Dame University, is an American who lives in Lebanon. Through her teaching, administrative posts, and research, she keeps up her interest in Language teaching, assessment, education, teacher training, Educational Technology and Educational Psychology. An advocate of CALL and a Certified On-Line Instructor/Trainer, she does education consultancy, conducts workshops, publishes, and participates in conferences on a national, regional and international level. She is a member of TESOL, serving as the CALL-IS Chair Elect. She also is an active contributor to TESOL Arabia activities and publications.   

 

Georgios Kormpas

Georgios is currently an English Instructor at INTERLINK at Al Yamamah University in Saudi Arabia.  He has previously taught students and trained teachers in Greece, and the USA.  He has been involved with teacher development/training and conference organizing since 2001 with TESOL Greece, TESOL International, the BC, the HAU, KSAALT and TESOL Arabia. He is also a certified examiner for various examination Boards, such as CAMLA, IELTS, Pearson, ETS and the Greek State English Exam Board.  Georgios has also been greatly involved in curriculum alignment, of various educational institutions with the CEFR.  He holds an MA in Linguistics/TESOL, other various TESOL certifications, and is a PhD candidate at Lancaster University with a concentration on online assessment.   

 

Justin Shewell

Justin Shewell works as an online education developer for Arizona State University. He holds a Ph.D. in Educational Technology and a Masters in TESOL. He is a teacher trainer and an instructional designer. He co-designed "Teach English Now!", the world's largest online TESOL certificate program, which won the Learner's First Award from Coursera. He provides workshops on integrating technology into language teaching, online teaching and development, and instructional design for language teaching.

Randall Davis

Randall Davis currently teaches at the English Language Institute at the University of Utah, in Salt Lake City. His areas of interest and specialty include Web-based materials development, language assessment, and teacher training.

 

Dawn Bikowski

Dr. Dawn Bikowski is the Director of the English Language Improvement Program (ELIP) in the Department of Linguistics. In addition to being a program director, she teaches Linguistics graduate coursework in pedagogical grammar and second language reading/writing. She has taught a variety of levels of English internationally and is heavily involved in ESL/EFL teacher training. International conferences and workshops, curriculum development projects, and program assessments have taken her to several countries across Europe, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East. With a PhD in Curriculum & Instruction: Instructional Technology and an MA in Linguistics, she engages in a number of materials writing projects using multimedia and online teaching. Her research interests include second language writing, English for Specific/Academic Purposes, intercultural communication, and computer-assisted language learning.
