Communication with parents

Remind 101 is an app that allows teachers to systematically and personalize their communication with ELL parents. Teachers are able to enroll their parents into the system by simply adding their numbers into the program. Teachers can send messages with videos or pictures to their whole class or individualize their message for a specific parent. Parents receive their message via text message for free and are able to reply directly to teachers. Remind 101 has added a feature where messages can be translated into 70 different languages. Teachers can access the app on their cellphones as well as on their iPads. Another great feature is that Remind 101 keeps track of parent communication for teachers and they can download or print out their parent communication logs for documentation purposes.

Presenter Bios:

Dr. Christine SabiehProfessor at Notre Dame University, is an American who lives in Lebanon. Through her teaching, administrative posts, and research, she keeps up her interest in Language teaching, assessment, education, teacher training, Educational Technology and Educational Psychology. An advocate of CALL and a Certified On-Line Instructor/Trainer, she does education consultancy, conducts workshops, publishes, and participates in conferences on a national, regional and international level. She is a member of TESOL, serving as the CALL-IS Chair Elect. She also is an active contributor to TESOL Arabia activities and publications. 

Dr. Connie Mitchell is an Assistant Professor who currently holds two positions at Prince Sultan University: Vice Dean of the College of Humanities and Director of the Teaching and Learning Center. She is also a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.  Dr. Mitchell has 22 years of teaching experience in the United States and in the Middle East and has taught English as a Second or Foreign Language courses, TEFL courses, and Linguistic courses.  She is involved in her field of specialization via different associations such as TESOL International, TESOL Arabia, TESOL Greece, and in the past she was the Riyadh Chapter Representative for KSAALT-TESOL.  Her research interest lies in professional development and quality assurance in higher education, linguistics, TESOL, TEFL, and program assessment. 

Dr. Christel Broady is a professor of graduate education, the chair of graduate advanced programs, director of the ESL teacher education at Georgetown College, USA, and a specialist for CALL ELT. She is an internationally known keynote speaker and author of books/book chapters, articles, and many other publication types, as well as the manager of an international ELT Professional Learning Community with members in 179 countries via social media on Facebook, BLOG, LinkedIn, and Twitter on CALL Topics. She is the past president of the Kentucky TESOL, former chair of the TESOL EEIS, current CALL steering board member, and newly elected board member of TESOL International Association (2018-2021).  A CAPE/NCATE program reviewer, she also represented TESOL at CAEP and on the national workgroup for the Seal of Bilinguality in K-12 USA schools. 

Dr. Kristen Lindahl is Assistant Professor of TESL in the Department of Bicultural-Bilingual Studies at The University of Texas at San Antonio. A teacher for over 15 years, Dr. Lindahl began as a K-12 ESL public educator and later moved into teacher education at the university level.  Currently, she is the TESOL International Teacher Education blogger and Chair-Elect-Elect of the TESOL Teacher Education Interest Section.  In her role at UTSA, she teaches and mentors educators at the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels, and maintains many international connections.  Her research explores Teacher Language Awareness, and the different ways that ESL, EFL and bilingual educators connect research to practice as they conceptualize language in the classroom.

Dr. M. Sidury Christiansen is Assistant Professor of TESL in the Department of Bicultural-Bilingual Studies at The University of Texas at San Antonio. She specializes in the research and teaching of sociolinguistics and digital literacies among bilinguals and English language learners. Her research explores the intersection between digital literacy and language ideologies, identities, and culture in offline and online social network environments. As a Fulbright scholar, she trains Mexican teachers on how to best use digital technologies for second language writing development and language learning. She is involved in the field through TESOL International and MEXTESOL, where she publishes a lot of her work on digital literacies. 

Damaris Gutierrez is an instructional support teacher for elementary reading and writing instruction at Northside ISD in San Antonio, Texas. She supports campuses that have linguistically and culturally diverse English Learners and develops literacy curriculum. She received her Masters in Teaching English as a Second Language from the University of Texas at San Antonio. Recently, she became a National Board Certified Teacher in English as a New Language: Early and Middle Childhood. While completing her certification process, she was a newcomer ESL teacher to refugee students from around the world. She is very passionate about second language acquisition and equitable educational opportunities.
